Lexile Level: Not available
This book is a graphic book written and illustrated by Jimmy Gownley. This book is all about the life of Amelia. This is a character that has adventures with her friends Reggie Pajamaman and Rhonda. Rhonda is not actually Amelia’s friend but they hang out with her. Amelia and her mom recently moved in with their Aunt Tanner. Amelia’s parents are getting a divorce and Amelia feels like she is at fault. She is also dealing with mixed feelings about boys. The story shows the kids playing freeze tag going to school or even going camping.
Is this a good story?
I think this is a great story kids will love that this story is told in comics and it deals with tough concepts like divorce. Also the main character is a girl which is adds diversity to the book. I really enjoyed reading this book it shows kids funny adventures that they’ll love!
Did the characters seem real? Did the characters’ personalities and reasons for their actions match?
I think the characters seemed real in the book their personalities match their actions perfectly. Rhonda likes Reggie and she doesn’t like Amelia is best friends with Reggie show her actions show this because she writes mean notes to Amelia and is angry whenever Amelia is around. Amelia feels guilty for her parent’s divorce so sometimes she gets sad in the book.

Did the language throughout
the book sound natural? When I read the book aloud did the characters’ sound
like people talking?
I think the language throughout the book sounded natural. The characters talked like any kid would talk, they said phrases like “NO FAIR” or “LIAR”. The characters talk to each other and fight with each other in a natural way.

Is this story something that
I think could happen? Is the plot believable?
I think that this story about Amelia’s life is something that many kids face. I think the cartoons help students cope with this difficult topic. I think the plot is very believable.
The comics include a lot of onomatopoeia. Almost on every page the reader can find an example of onomatopoeia. Examples of onomatopoeia are “ACHOOOOO” “CRASH” “Snap”. The story also include simile, like “You should like you were written by Stan Lee” (Gownley 32). The author also uses ellipsis in his comics.
The illustrations are really funny and they help the reader understand what is happening throughout the story. There are great facial expressions on each character. When a character is sneezing it shows the act of sneezing. The illustrations really help this book.
A mini lesson that I would do with this book is have the students create their own comic strip comparable to Amelia Rules!. The comic strip would have to include onomatopoeia, and dialogue between characters. The comic strip would have to be at least 5 boxes long.
